Matthew Effect and Edu cational Accomplishments

Everyone is not equal in wealth. Some rich, some poor and some middle class or average. But there is a dominant trend in wealth or riches, that they are rich tend to get richer. And those who are poor, remain poor. Catchier phrase is “the rich get richer and the poor get poorer”. One could say the rich know how to make money, make more money so it is natural to them. But the poor do not have the skills or capital to make money and even just simply make them poorer. As a general observation bitter but come under the long and never ending “Life is not fair” list. It is even there in the Bible. The Gospel According to Matthew says:

For to everyone who has, more will be given, and they will have abundance, but from those who have nothing, even what they will be taken. – Matthew 25:29, New Revised Standard Version

In the case of the less fancy using street language, if you got it, flaunt it and grow with it. If you do not get it, it is unlikely you will get it. Students are assessed to check whether they have mastered a particular subject or not. The practical application of acquired knowledge and skills have been ignored. Learning approach does not incorporate the skills needed and failed to support the students in the long run.

Authentic assessment is a technique that can be used by teachers to assess the overall growth of students. It evaluates student learning throughout the year and asks students to use knowledge and skills to produce meaningful content.
